Open Burning Code Changes
The City of Mayfield Heights has made changes to the Codified Ordinance regarding Open Burning. Open burning shall be permitted for bonfires, campfires, and outdoor fireplace equipment, whether for cooking food, recreation or warmth if the following conditions are met:
The fire is fueled with clean, seasoned firewood, natural gas or equivalent, or any clean burning fuel with emissions that are equivalent to or lower than those created from the burning of seasoned firewood.
The fire must have a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height.
If you open burn, the Mayfield Heights Fire Department asks that you use care so as not to cause a nuisance to the neighborhood from smoke or from the burning embers that become airborne. If a call is received at the Fire Department, it is usually because the smoke and debris is a nuisance to other people. The Fire Department has a duty to act and enforce our nuisance ordinance which includes a verbal warning for the first violation, a written warning for the second infraction and a citation for a court appearance for the third infraction.
