“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”  Anne Bradstreet

I trust all are as excited as I, for the change in season and exciting events the City has to offer in the upcoming spring and summer months. City Council has recently approved my budget proposal. The 2008 City Budget will again keep the City in a sound financial position. Special thanks to our Finance Director Bob Tribby and his entire staff for all of their hard work and efforts in this regard. In light of the recent Plain Dealer article depictingthe financial strains of many municipalities, you should feel comfortable and proud to know that your city officials continue to stay ahead of the curve with regard to economic development issues to provide our residents and business community with the very best service in a fiscally responsible manner.

The above referenced quotation is not only appropriate for the season, but also is a positive reflection with regard to the Mayfield Road Construction Project. When complete, this stretch of road on our signature street will vastly improve traffic efficiency that has plagued the area for many years. As previously reported, the City’s diligence was rewarded with a nearly $500,000 grant from the Federal Government wherein for the first time in the history of the City of Mayfield Heights our name appeared in a bill signed by the President of the United States to receive a grant toward our Mayfield Road Project. We are expecting a very productive construction season in 2008 as we have approved a change order to increase the workload from 40 hours per week to nearly 60 hours per week. The stretch of the project from Lander Road to Golden Gate Shopping Center remains on schedule to be complete by July, 2008. In addition, the area from Walmart to the Gates Mills corporate line is scheduled to be complete shortly thereafter.
Our economic development consultants, in collaboration with my office, the building department, and finance department, were successful in obtaining a grant from the County for landscape development and business storefront improvements from Lander Road westbound to the Lyndhurst corporate line. Another beautification project is now complete and shortly we will be replacing our “welcome signs” with a new sign that has been a true community effort. The Mayor’s Community Council, comprised of nearly 45 residents interested in volunteering their time for the betterment of the City, was extremely instrumental with regard to designing the new signs. Recently, City Council unanimously approved the purchase of the new signs.

I am proud to announce the hiring of the URS Corporation as the City’s new engineering firm. I, on behalf of City Council and my entire administration, send a heartfelt “thank you” to Tom Hippley and Fisher & Associates for their many years of dedicated and professional service to the City. We wish Tom well in his retirement. URS and our designated engineers, Dave McCallops, P.E. and Joe Ferenczy, P.E. have already hit the ground running and I am
looking forward to a rewarding relationship with our new firm with many years of top service to our residents and business community.

I thank all of you who responded to our city wide survey, provided in the last version of our City Focus. Your comments, concerns, and compliments are appreciated and will be put to good use to continue to improve upon our ability to serve. We will continue to find ways to communicate and educate with regard to city services and information beneficial to both the residential and business communities. Please make a special note to tune into the City’s radio station, AM 1700, the City website at www.mayfieldheights.org , and the City Cable Channel (Time Warner Channel 23) for up-to-date pertinent information.

May all of you enjoy a safe, fun, and relaxing summer. I look forward to seeing you at our many wonderful events. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me and City Council.

Very Truly Yours,

Gregory S. Costabile, Esq.
